Tiramisu: A Love Story

My favorite dessert of all time is tiramisu. Every time I eat it, I have this moment where everything around me stops and the only thing that matters is each spoonful of espresso soaked lady fingers and silky mascarpone that enters my mouth. Prior to this afternoon, my favorite tiramisu came from Mazzeo's Ristorante, a local Italian restaurant in my hometown. I only went once a year, on my birthday, and always ended the meal with a perfect square of tiramisu and a frothy cappuccino.

This afternoon I had lunch at Antico Forno in The North End, my absolute favorite area of Boston. I sat at my table listening to a group of men speaking beautiful Italian, dipped warm pieces of bread into herbaceous olive oil and swirled perfectly al dente linguine and mussels until my stomach grew twice its size. Then came the tiramisu. It was the biggest square that has ever been placed before me and I knew before I dug in that it would be incredible.

It was like eating a cloud - so light and creamy that it just melted in my mouth. I alternated bites with sips of my cabernet franc and knew that absolutely nothing could make the moment any better.

I wish I could say this photo was posed, but it's not. It's me in my pure, unadulterated bliss.

I also wish I could say this was attractive, but then again I don't really care.

  4. I've never had tiramisu, but I know a place around here (nyc) called the Organic Grill has a vegan version. I fought off the urge to try it last time I was there though because I'd had Lula's ice cream earlier in the day and was just finishing off a waffle (I love breakfast for dinner).

I haven't tried a vegan version, but I'm wary because I'm a total tiramisu traditionalist. I haven't had it in years, since before I became vegan, so it was a pretty fabulous reunion. If I'm ever in the NYC area I would love to try their vegan tiramisu, though!

    Haha thanks!

Blasphemy! It's okay, I don't really like chocolate cake which people find shocking.
